2013 Vina Tondonia Tinto, Reserva, Bodegas R. Lopez de Heredia, Rioja, Spain

HoldWell stockedJames Suckling 95/100

Tasting in the presence of María José of López de Heredia was quite special, and the newest release of their famed single vineyard, Viña Tondonia Tinto Reserva, showed beautifully. Offering aromas of crushed rose petals, dried cherries and forest floor, this 2013 was showing its completeness on the palate with its drinkability. Flavours of allspice and cured jamón come through, the texture is elegantly crafted, with long fine tannins and an abundant vibrant freshness to complete. Delicious.

What a juicy wine. Medium-bodied, showing lots of citrusy allure to the savoury plums with a touch of leather. Very bright and succulent. The tannins are firm but resolved. Really long. So delicious and irresistible now but will hold.

The canonical red 2013 Viña Tondonia Reserva has a developed nose of dried roses and tar, with mushrooms, truffles, damp earth and decayed leaves, hints of brick dust and spice.

Joaquín Hidalgo 97/100

A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, grown in the calcareous soils of the Tondonia meander. Aged extensively in American oak, it offers restrained black fruit, wild herbs, balsamic hints and sweet spices.
